Matt Walker got his Junior World Cup season well and truly under way at Fort William with the run of his life. So fast, he beat the field by 5 seconds with a time that would have put him 9th in the Elite race! We grabbed Matt for a quick word on his way back from the podium.
The way I look at it - if you’re thinking as you’re going down then you’re normally going slow! I rode the top really well and carried my speed through the rock sections. I could tell I was on one of the best runs of the weekend so I just committed as much as I could through the woods. It was 50/50 as to whether you’re going to get through or not… I just aimed for the middle and tried to ride it out best as I could! Afterwards, I ‘turned my brain back on’, cracked on as hard as possible and hammered the motorway section.
I was coming towards the final jumps and the crowd was amazing – screaming at me to keep going! I was in the air on the final jump and I looked up saw green on the gantry… I went across the line and the crowd just lit up. Amazing. The feeling is just unbelievable, it’s hard to put it into words but it’s what dream are made of.
This is way better than my other World Cup victory from last season. Cairns was my first so will always be special but it was so far from home and I didn’t have my family and friends there with me. To do it in Fort William at a ‘man’s track’ and the home race is THE place to do it.
I feel like I’m in a pretty good place, I’ve showed my strengths and that I’m fit and strong. Just need to build up the confidence even more and keep the ball rolling!
